With a husband in the military, Mrs. Sykes lived in many locations that inspired her love of the arts. When they retired and settled in Oriental, Marlene thought a co-op art gallery similar to one she had
been involved in California would be a great addition to the community. She was instrumental in establishing Circle 10 Art Gallery in Oriental.
Watercolors are Marlene’s forte but that is not to say she hasn’t been a life long student of the arts, as evidenced in her hand made paper creations and hand felted pieces. Sykes is also known for her
exceptional collages made from papers she has painted.
Throughout her art career, Marlene has been a teacher, a student, an inspiration to all who have had the good fortune to know her.
No longer painting, Marlene continues to share her love of the arts by participating in a local art critique group and showing her work in local galleries.
