ARTISTEvie Chang Henderson
“The challenge for me as an artist is exploring both the expressiveness and technical aspects of the medium — whether it is painting, photography or poetry. In bird photography, additional challenges include not only the speed at which one must work (the subject seldom poses for you), but to capture the glint from an eye as well as something uniquely expressive about that particular bird.”
When Evie Chang Henderson retired to Oriental after a 32-year college teaching career that spanned Fine Art, Graphic Design and Advertising Design, she never anticipated that she would find a new vocation as an award-winning Photographer and Poet.
Evie was born and raised in Jamaica, West Indies, the grand-daughter of immigrants from China. She came to the U.S. as a foreign student and graduated from Ringling College of Art & Design (BFA) and Winthrop University (MAT). She lived in Germany briefly and traveled throughout Europe, as well as China, Guatemala and Turkey. She spent the summer of 1988 in India in a Fulbright Studies Program.
Her paintings have been exhibited regionally, nationally and internationally – most notably, in Germany, Spain, Morocco, India and Kenya. Her work has been purchased by such corporations as Carolina East Medical Center, McDonalds Corp., and NCNB (now Bank of America), and also hangs in numerous private collections.
Evie’s background in both Painting and Graphic Design informs her photographic work, which regularly wins local and regional awards, as well as her award-winning Poetry
Evie joined Circle 10 Art Gallery several years after moving to Oriental and remained an active member until the Gallery ended its run. She was President of the Pamlico County Arts Council (2010-2013). She said “this show brings back fond memories of some of the best artists in Oriental, and of friendships that I will always cherish. Happily, many of these artists are still working and we remain friends and colleagues.”
