Artist Donna Slade

Working primarily in colored pencils I create contemporary realism works featuring a straightforward approach to representational art. Observing closely, looking past the obvious, my goal is to capture and portray objects and their physical appearance in reality. I desire those that see my work to discover the unique beauty in everyday objects and places.

Donna Slade is a contemporary realist painter and former gallery owner.  She enjoyed a 30 year award-winning career in advertising, art direction, design and illustration.  Her signature colored pencil paintings are executed in a contemporary realism style with a desire to capture and portray a series of objects and their physical appearance in reality.

Thirty to fifty different colors are blended together, working from dark to light, creating bright, bold color values.  Donna works mostly on Ampersand pastel board which provides some tooth to hold the pencil and is not so slick that the many layers can not be blended.  In some cases 100’s of hours can be spent on individual pieces.

Her work is diverse in subject matter, ranging from “still life” which provides a close view of the beauty in ordinary objects, “landscapes” which show the grace and rhythms of nature, to “portraits” that capture individual personalities.

Donna has earned local and international recognition, recently winning the “Grand Prize” — People and Figures contest sponsored by the “International Artist” magazine.  She has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions.  Her work has been published in The International Artist Magazine, The Best of Colored Pencil, Colored Pencil Society of America Signature Showcase, CP Treasures Colored Pencil Masterworks from Around the Globe I, CP Treasures Volume II, CP Treasures Volume III, CP Treasures Volume IV, The Best of American Pastel Artists & Artisans, Volume 1, Step-By-Step Design Magazine, as well as several regional and local magazines.

Donna is a charter and signature member of the CPSA (Colored Pencil Society of America) and past president of CPSA North Carolina District Chapter.  Donna is also a member and past president of the North Carolina Pastel Society, as well as a member of the Portrait Society of America and the Craven Arts Council and Gallery.  She is a past member of The Triangle Artist Guild, The International Guild of Realism, The Fine Arts League of Cary and has served on the board of directors for the Wake Forest Cultural Arts Association.
